SUMMARY:Compassionate Leadership Training course for health and social care leaders -Thursday afternoon
DESCRIPTION:Compassionate Leadership Training for health and social care leaders. Compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. \n\n\n\nSix online weekly two-hour sessions from 8 October until 19 November (no session on 29 October). Following this\, there will be monthly follow-up sessions to review our learning and practice. The dates for these are currently being organised.  \n\n\n\nOverview \n\n\n\nAt the heart of compassion is the notion that everyone experiences difficulty\, and that we can all play a role in alleviating our own difficulties and those of others. Whether this is compassion for ourselves or the people we lead\, people who lead us\, colleagues or service users. We won’t always feel like helping and will sometimes be tired or overwhelmed or unable to connect. \n\n\n\nAlthough it helps to have positive feelings\, we do not have to feel compassion to be compassionate. We can recognise our physical and mental state\, resource ourselves as best we can\, and respond from our firm compassionate intention\, rather than from impulse or intense emotion. \n\n\n\nHow does this translate into compassion in health\, social care and other organisations? How might we think about compassionate leadership\, working with colleagues\, service users and their friends and families? Prof Michael West has spent his career answering this question\, pointing to research that shows how compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. In short\, compassion is essential to high quality healthcare. \n\n\n\nWho is the course for?\n\n\n\nThe course is for anyone in a leadership role within Health and Social Care and will combine experiential practice and reflection\, as well as home practice to help cultivate compassion for ourselves and the people we lead. \n\n\n\nWhat is the format of the course?\n\n\n\nThe course combines in-session mindfulness and compassion practice with reflection and discussion\, as well as an invitation for home mindfulness and compassion practice to help cultivate compassion for ourselves and the people we lead and work with. \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\nRobert Marx \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert is Co-Lead (Training) for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre. He is a consultant clinical psychologist and has been involved in running mindfulness groups for staff and patients since 2006. He also trains and supervises others doing mindfulness work. He is interested in relational mindfulness and in adaptations of Mindfulness-based Interventions using compassion practices. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJulia Powell\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulia is a mindfulness teacher and coach. She leads mindfulness courses to help people find more balance in their lives\, improve their wellbeing and flourish. While caring for her mother who lived with dementia\, Julia used her mindfulness practice to help navigate the challenging times. She now draws on that experience in the training she offers to both carers of people living with dementia and people with mild to moderate dementia. Having trained to teach with Oxford Mindfulness Centre\, and taught with Sussex Mindfulness Centre\, Julia is registered with the British Association of Mindfulness Based Approaches. Julia runs three mindfulness courses for the general population: Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy\, Mindfulness for Life and Finding Peace in a Frantic World. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking\n\n\n\nThis event is now fully booked. SUMMARY:Mindful creative all-day retreat
DESCRIPTION:A one-day mindfulness retreat\, including meditation practices\, creative expression and journaling\, that will be held mostly in silence. Experience of creative expression is not necessary. \n\n\n\nBackground to the day\n\n\n\nThis day builds on the positive responses from offering a similar event last year.  We realised from last year’s experience that there was a real hunger\, both for connecting with our creativity and also for engaging with mindfulness and compassion practices in ways that keep us freshly discovering ourselves. We found last time that for some people\, creative practices really deepened places inside that they could access in a way that was both different from\, and also complementary to\, the mindfulness practice.  \n\n\n\nChögyam Trungpa Rinpoche\, the great Tibetan meditation teacher\, saw art as a direct extension of meditation practice. He believed that art naturally arises from the clarity of the settled mind. Trungpa emphasized a “Dharma art” that was simple\, immediate and unembellished\, not an ego-based\, “self-expression”:  “Dharma art is simply the activity of nonaggression. It is the expression of basic sanity. When you are free from aggression\, your perception becomes clear and precise. Then whatever you do – whether arranging flowers\, painting\, writing poetry\, or making a cup of tea – can become an expression of that sanity.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nContent of the day\n\n\n\nThis day will be held as a mostly silent retreat day with mindfulness practices interspersed with creativity\, using clay\, drawing/painting and journaling. Some meditation experience (such as having done an 8 week course) is required but no experience of artistic work is needed. Materials will be supplied. The day will be held at the Sussex Education Centre on the Millview hospital site. \n\n\n\nWhy a one-day retreat?\n\n\n\nA one-day mindfulness retreat is an important part of the eight-week mindfulness course. It also offers an opportunity to extend your practice within a supportive environment. For people who meditate regularly the retreat offers a great way to deepen and refresh your practice. Read more about the benefits of a day long retreat. \n\n\n\nThis day retreat counts towards the requirement to attend silent retreats as part your BAMBA registration as a mindfulness teacher. \n\n\n\nWho is it for?\n\n\n\nThis day is right for you if you have attended an eight-week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy\, Mindfulness for Life or Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course\, or have an established mindfulness practice. No artistic experience is required. Please note\, this is not a clinical intervention and it is not advisable to do this day in the heat of a crisis\, when it would be important to access your GP or your designated mental health clinician. \n\n\n\nRetreat leaders\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Marx\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Marx is Co-Lead for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre. He is a consultant clinical psychologist and Cognitive-Analytic psychotherapist\, mindfulness (MBCT) and compassion-based (MSC) teacher.  He has been co-running day retreats in Sussex Partnership twice a year for around 15 years and more recently\, five-day residential mindfulness retreats. Painting and writing have also been important to him and he has incorporated both into his own personal retreats. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nSarah Marx\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah Marx has been working therapeutically with adults\, children and families for the past 20 years. Originally trained as an adult therapist and then as a Child and Adolescent psychotherapist\, Sarah has worked in the NHS\, university counselling services\, schools\, colleges and private practice. She has trained in multiple therapy modalities\, including psychodynamic\, Cognitive-Analytic and mindfulness (MBCT)\, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP)\, EMDR and Theraplay.  Wanting to incorporate the transformative nature of creativity into her clinical work\, Sarah qualified at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE) where she went on to teach.  She has worked as a trainer for Trauma Informed Schools UK and is part of the leadership team at Beacon House.   She is also a ceramicist and has exhibited locally. \n\n\n\n\n\nCertificate of attendance\n\n\n\nCertificates of attendance can be supplied on completion of the day\, if requested. Please note\, you’ll need to attend for the whole day. It’s not possible to only come for a portion of the day. The retreats run from 10am to 5pm\, and we ask people to join from 9.45am to ensure a prompt start. \n\n\n\nTicket price\n\n\n\nThe cost for the day is £75. We also offer a choice of two other options: \n\n\n\n£100 – Supporting rate. SUMMARY:Resourcing ourselves in uncertain times: Online weekend retreat
DESCRIPTION:A weekend retreat from your own home. Within the current uncertainty and challenges in our world\, this retreat will explore how our mindfulness practice can resource us\, supporting steadiness\, openness\, joy\, compassion and nourishment. \n\n\n\n\n\nBrief overview\n\n\n\nThe retreat will offer mindfulness and compassion practices designed to deepen self-care and our capacities to be open and available to others in these uncertain times.  With the scaffolding of the four foundations of mindfulness\, we will explore together how we can resource ourselves in our practice\, building stability and fostering qualities of the heart\, such as tenderness\, courage\, kindness and joy.  \n\n\n\nWe will offer a mix of guided and unguided practices including periods of stillness\, movement\, rest and unstructured silent time. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe are committed to ensuring that our retreats are accessible and inclusive to diverse communities and are keen to support participants who may have specific needs related to disability\, health or other conditions.  Please feel welcome to contact us if it would be helpful to discuss any support needs prior to the retreat. \n\n\n\nMost of the retreat will be held in silence\, though there is the possibility to talk to either of the teachers individually if needed. \n\n\n\nStructured sessions \n\n\n\nThe programme will run from Friday evening until Sunday morning with the following timings for structured sessions: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 6 November: 6.30 – 8.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 7 November: 7.15 – 8am; 9.30am – 12.30pm; 2.30pm – 5.30pm; 7.30 – 8.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 8 November: 7.15 – 8am; 9.30 – 1pm\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe encourage participants to consider the whole weekend as an opportunity for an extended period of practice\, rest and silence\, as far as this is possible and compassionate given your life situation. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere is it?  \n\n\n\nOnline. You can attend from your own home whether or not you live with others. You will be given guidance on how to prepare for the retreat. \n\n\n\nWho is the retreat for? \n\n\n\nThe retreat is designed for people with some experience of mindfulness and/or compassion practice who want to deepen their practice in a supportive\, safe environment. As a minimum\, participants should have a regular practice of their own and should have done an eight-week mindfulness-based or compassion-based course. It is helpful to have attended at least a one-day\, silent retreat. \n\n\n\nThe retreat is a valuable opportunity for mindfulness and compassion-based teachers to further deepen their practice in community with others. The retreat will count towards the annual retreat requirement for teachers and supervisors on the BAMBA Register. \n\n\n\nRetreat leaders\n\n\n\nBridgette O’Neill\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBridgette is a clinical psychologist by professional training and has taught mindfulness-based approaches in NHS mental health services for staff and clients since 2002. SUMMARY:Deeper Mindfulness: Frame by Frame
DESCRIPTION:‘Deeper Mindfulness: exploring feeling tone Frame by Frame‘ is a new eight-week course developed for people who want to explore mindfulness more deeply. The online course runs on Tuesday evenings from 19 January 2027 and includes an optional one-day retreat in 2027. \n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nThis course allows people to explore an aspect of mindfulness that isn’t covered explicitly in other courses: ‘feeling tone.’ Feeling tone is a sense of the positive or negative that every human experiences and is the tipping point for our mood. \n\n\n\nDeeper Mindfulness is informed by recent psychological findings that reveal that every waking moment\, our understanding of the world is dominated by imagining how we can take action within it\, coloured by what is called ‘feeling tone.’ Feeling tone is the moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of how much a sensation\, thought\, or emotion feels pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neither. Based on this moment-by-moment ‘read out\,’ the body allocates its resources as it gears up for real or imagined action. This can prepare us well for action\, but it can also put us at risk of becoming exhausted without our realising it. \n\n\n\nDuring the eight weekly sessions\, you will learn meditations that help you tune into feeling tone moment by moment\, frame by frame. This provides an opportunity to see more clearly both the tipping points for distress and exhaustion\, and also how to flourish by freeing yourself to appreciate life again\, even in the midst of difficulty. \n\n\n\nWho is the course for?\n\n\n\nThis course is designed for those who have already completed an eight-week mindfulness-based programme and want to explore mindfulness more deeply. Please note\, this courses is designed for the general population and may not be suitable for everyone. If you are experiencing significant mental health issues\, you should talk to your GP about being referred to the appropriate clinical service. \n\n\n\nWhen? \n\n\n\nTuesdays\, 5.30pm to 7.30pm\, starting 19 January and running until 16 March 2027 (no session on 16 February). \n\n\n\nWhere?\n\n\n\nOnline. The zoom link will be sent closer to the time of the course. \n\n\n\nThe format of the course\n\n\n\nThe course is delivered over eight weekly sessions\, each lasting two hours. Each session builds on what’s been introduced before\, so it’s important to attend all the sessions if possible. (If you know you’re going to miss a session\, please let your teacher know). You’ll be in a group of up to 16 people. \n\n\n\nEach session begins with a short\, guided meditation\, then (with the exception of the first session) there’s a review and inquiry into the past week. The second half of the session introduces the theme for the week and includes a meditation. There’ll be space to review what you and others experienced or discovered during the practice. The sessions are followed by suggestions for home-based personal practice of around 20 minutes per day. This includes both recommended guided practices for the week\, and also ways to cultivate mindfulness in everyday life. \n\n\n\nYou’ll have access to guided practices and written materials to support each session. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to find out more\, you can watch the short video in which Taravajra talks about this course. \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\nWe have two experienced teachers leading this course. SUMMARY:Compassionate Leadership Training course for health and social care leaders -Thursday morning
DESCRIPTION:Compassionate Leadership Training for health and social care leaders. Compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. \n\n\n\nThere are six online two-hour sessions on Thursdays (9.30-11.30) from 11 February until 18 March. \n\n\n\nFollowing this\, there will be optional monthly follow-up sessions to review our learning and practice. The dates for these are 21 April 4-5pm\, 11 May 4-5pm\, 10 June 4-5pm\, 14 July 4-5pm\, 15 September 4-5pm\, 19 October 4-5pm\, 15 Nov 4-5pm\, 16 December 4-5pm. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOverview \n\n\n\nAt the heart of compassion is the notion that everyone experiences difficulty\, and that we can all play a role in alleviating our own difficulties and those of others. \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\nRuth Sequeira\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuth Sequeira is as senior trainer\, supervisor and mindfulness teacher for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre.
