SUMMARY:Compassionate Leadership Training course - Thursday afternoons
DESCRIPTION:Join our six-week Compassionate Leadership Training designed for all health and social care leaders. Compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. \n\n\n\nThe course is made up of six weekly two-hour sessions and further consolidation sessions after the course is complete. This course runs on Thursdays from 3-5pm\, from 30 January 2025 until 13 March 2025. There is no session on 20 February. Following this\, there are several two-hour online consolidation sessions to review practice and learning. All graduates are invited to attend these sessions. See the dates for 2025 below. \n\n\n\nWatch a short (1.5 minute) video to find out more. \n\n\n\nOverview \n\n\n\nAt the heart of compassion is the notion that everyone experiences difficulty and that we can all play a role in alleviating our own difficulties and those of others. Whether this is compassion for ourselves or the people we lead\, people who lead us\, colleagues or service users. We won’t always feel like helping and will sometimes be tired or overwhelmed or unable to connect. \n\n\n\nAlthough it helps to have positive feelings\, we do not have to feel compassion to be compassionate. We can recognise our physical and mental state\, resource ourselves as best we can\, and respond from our firm compassionate intention\, rather than from impulse or intense emotion. \n\n\n\nHow does this translate into compassion in health\, social care\, and other organisations? How might we think about compassionate leadership\, working with colleagues\, service users and their friends and families? Prof. Michael West has spent his career answering this question\, pointing to research that shows how compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. In short\, compassion is essential to high-quality healthcare. \n\n\n\nDr Robert Marx and Professor Clara Strauss have designed this innovative training programme of six weekly sessions\, each lasting two hours\, with an additional follow-on consolidation sessions following the completion of the course. See details below of the dates for optional review and practice sessions. \n\n\n\nWho is the course for?\n\n\n\nThe course is for anyone in a leadership role in a health and social care organisation\, recognising that leadership occurs throughout health and social care roles\, and at different levels of seniority. \n\n\n\nWhat is the format of the course?\n\n\n\nThe course combines in-session mindfulness and compassion practice with reflection and discussion\, as well as an invitation for home mindfulness and compassion practice to help cultivate compassion for ourselves and the people we lead and work with. \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\nRobert Marx \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Marx is co-lead for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre and leads the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in Talking Therapies in NHS services training centres collaboration. He is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist and has been teaching mindfulness to patients and staff in the NHS for 18 years. He teaches MBCT and Mindful Self-Compassion. He has been practising Buddhist meditation for over 30 years\, initially in the Theravadan tradition and then in the Tibetan tradition. He is passionate about building compassionate cultures in organisations and about integrating relational and mindful approaches to work. \n\n\n\nRuth Sequeira\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuth Sequeira is a senior trainer\, supervisor\, and mindfulness teacher for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre. She is also a psychological therapist and the mindfulness and compassion training and retreat lead at the Mindfulness Network. SUMMARY:Mindful movement masterclass
DESCRIPTION:The simple mention of mindful movement often generates a feeling tone: liking or disliking\, rarely neither. For many teachers\, it is their least preferred core practice to guide. Questions often arise about its purpose and place within the eight-week course. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat is covered?\n\n\n\nChris Barker will guide you through a variety of approaches to mindful movement. This will help you find movements that resonate with you and feel authentic\, enabling you to find your own voice when you are guiding practices. \n\n\n\nWe will also explore the purpose and position of mindful movement within the eight-week course. The mind and body are more closely connected than we may initially think. Mindful movement provides an access point to begin to see personal patterns of reactivity. It exposes our relationship with ourselves\, how we approach life\, as well identifying moods and emotions that colour our beliefs and interpretations\, in the moment. \n\n\n\nWho is this for?\n\n\n\nThis masterclass is for both experienced and aspiring mindfulness teachers who can benefit from Chris’s knowledge and insights of mindful movement. Chris takes a fresh look at this topic based on his experience of teaching mindful movement for over twenty years. Chris draws on his own experience of teaching a variety of mindful based programmes to a wide range of people\, as well as bringing a grounded theoretical understanding. \n\n\n\nThe facilitator\n\n\n\nChris Barker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Barker’s path into mindfulness was as a stressed Head of Physical Education in a large secondary school. Despite his initial reservations that it was just “yoga and meditation\, that I couldn’t see myself doing” he was persuaded by colleagues to give it a try. It changed his life. Not overnight\, but by allowing every drop of mindfulness\, squeezed into every frantic day\, to permeate through his previously sceptical being! \n\n\n\nChris predominantly shares mindfulness with cancer groups and leads on this both for the National Centre of Integrative Medicine (NCIM) as well as supporting fellow teachers. A qualified supervisor\, Chris also teaches Mindfulness for Life for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre\, NCIM and various counselling charities in the South-West of England\, where he lives. \n\n\n\nA recent mindfulness graduate from the University of Exeter\, Chris is well-placed to lead on mindful movement for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre at retreats and in this masterclass\, training a new generation of teachers. Having been in their shoes only several years ago\, enables Chris to break down this often under loved part of the eight-week course for trainees and experienced teachers alike. \n\n\n\n\n\nPracticalities\n\n\n\nA significant section of the morning will be engaging in mindful movement. To facilitate this\, it is helpful to have sufficient space to extend your arms in all directions while standing\, sitting or in floor movements. Loose clothes are always helpful as well as sufficient layers to retain body heat. As always\, clear guidance will be offered around tailoring the movements to meet the needs of your body. Finally\, as I say to all my participants ‘as long as you can hear me you don’t need to be able to see me’. This means you have the option to move away from the screen. \n\n\n\nCertificates\n\n\n\nThis is valid for ongoing personal development in mindfulness or as part of the Sussex Mindfulness Centre teacher training pathway. Certificates of attendance can be supplied on completion of the day’s training\, if requested. \n\n\n\nTicket prices\n\n\n\n\nGeneral admission: £99.00\n\n\n\nSussex Partnership Foundation Trust staff members: £50.00\n\n\n\nAlumni: Adapted MBI/Foundation/MBCT in NHS Talking Therapies (previous 2 years only): £30.00\n\n\n\nCurrent Adapted MBI/Foundation trainees (2024 cohort only): £15.00\n\n\n\nCurrent MBCT in NHS Talking Therapies trainees (2024 cohort only): £15.00\n\n\n\nSussex Mindfulness Centre-employed/contracted mindfulness teachers: £30.00\n\n\n\n\nPlease read our Terms and Conditions before booking your ticket: Terms and conditions – Sussex Mindfulness Centre

SUMMARY:Compassionate Leadership Training course - Tuesdays
DESCRIPTION:Compassionate Leadership Training for health and social care leaders. Compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. \n\n\n\nSix online weekly two-hour sessions from Tuesday 15 October until 26 November on Tuesdays from 3.00-5.00pm. There is no session on 29 October. There is a two-hour online consolidation session on 4 February 2025 to review learning and practice. \n\n\n\nOverview \n\n\n\nAt the heart of compassion is the notion that everyone experiences difficulty\, and that we can all play a role in alleviating our own difficulties and those of others. \n\n\n\nHow does this translate into compassion in health\, social care and other organisations? How might we think about compassionate leadership\, working with colleagues\, service users and their friends and families? Prof Michael West has spent his career answering this question\, pointing to research that shows how compassionate leadership is linked with improved learning and innovation\, and reduced staff stress\, injuries and absenteeism\, and even reduced patient mortality. In short\, compassion is essential to high quality healthcare. \n\n\n\nDr Robert Marx and Professor Clara Strauss have designed a training programme of six weekly sessions\, each lasting two hours\, with an additional follow-on two hour session a couple of months following the completion of the course. \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\nClara Strauss\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClara is Co-Lead (Research) for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre. She is a consultant clinical psychologist\, mindfulness teacher and clinical researcher. In her research\, Clara is particularly interested in developing and evaluating new forms of mindfulness-based intervention\, especially for those people who may not be willing or able to access MBCT. Along with other members of her research team\, Clara has been evaluating mindfulness courses for people experiencing depression\, for people distressed by hearing voices and for people experiencing obsessive-compulsive disorder. \n\n\n\nRobert Marx \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Marx is co-lead for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre and leads the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in Talking Therapies in NHS services training centres collaboration. \n\n\n\nNicky Mouat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicky is a Mental Health Nurse and Mindfulness teacher.
