A new name for the next chapter of our work

From today, 8 September 2026, Sussex Mindfulness & Compassion is changing its name to Sussex Mindfulness & Compassion Centre. The new name reflects how our work has evolved with compassion now at the heart of what we do, alongside mindfulness.

We’re now Sussex Mindfulness & Compassion Centre

Over the past few years, compassion has become an increasingly important part of our work. Alongside our established mindfulness programmes, we now offer Compassionate Leadership Training, compassion retreats, and Mindful Self-Compassion and Fierce Self-Compassion courses and teacher training, as well as contributing to research in this growing field. Our new name reflects what has already become a significant part of our training, practice and research.

Beyond programmes

But the change is about more than the programmes we offer.

Our purpose extends beyond supporting individual wellbeing. We are interested in how mindfulness and compassion can contribute to healthier organisations, communities and wider society.

Mindfulness can help us become more aware of our experience and the world around us, and respond more wisely to what we notice. Compassion complements this by bringing care and kindness to how we meet difficulty – in ourselves, in others and in the circumstances in which we live and work.

At a time when many people are experiencing considerable pressure, uncertainty and division, compassion feels particularly important. We want to make our commitment to it explicit: not simply as an individual practice, but as a value that can help shape how we relate to one another and the cultures and systems of which we are part. This wider emphasis on organisational and community wellbeing was an important part of the thinking behind the change.

An evolution, rather than a new direction

Although our name is changing, we remain the same organisation, with the same commitment to high-quality, evidence-informed mindfulness and compassion training, teaching, practice and research.

We have also kept our familiar shell icon as part of our new identity. We hope this conveys something important about the change: this is an evolution of our work rather than a departure from it.

The decision followed consultation with our partner organisations, advocates, staff and the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Board. We were grateful for the thoughtful feedback we received, and we announced our intention to change our name at our annual conference in May.

Our new name

Our full name is now “Sussex Mindfulness & Compassion Centre”. For most of our everyday communications – including our website, newsletter and social media – you will see us using the shorter “Sussex Mindfulness & Compassion”.

We are excited about this next chapter and look forward to continuing to work with our participants, trainees, teachers, partners and wider community – bringing mindfulness and compassion together in ways that support both individual and collective wellbeing.
